Home -> News & Blog -> Temporary fumigation obligation for goods to Australia and New Zealand active again as of September
The Agriculture Departments of Australia and New Zealand have announced that beginning September 1, 2023, and arrival date April 30, 2024, they have reimposed import restrictions on goods from certain countries.
The restrictions are in response to the threat of the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB), which is classified as an invasive species in Australia and New Zealand.
The marbled tree bug is a small, brown-colored bug native to North America. It was first discovered in Europe in 2010 and in Australia in 2013. The bug is a pest of agricultural crops and can also be a nuisance to humans. It feeds on a variety of plants, including fruits, vegetables, and grains, and can also invade and colonize buildings.
The import restrictions apply to goods from Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, the USA and other countries.
Goods from these countries may only be imported if they have previously undergone treatment against BMSB. The treatment can be either by fumigation or by heat treatment.
The restrictions apply to wood, cork, carpets, stone & cement, ceramics, glass, iron and steel, electrical machinery, vehicles of all kinds, fuels, tires and rubber, paper and paper products, chemicals, plastics and other commodity groups, among others.
